General Description

A member of Galazar's second generation of Ethernet over SONET (EoS) mapping devices, the MSF2500 is targeted at highly integrated multi-service access applications in next-generation SONET/SDH networks. Based on the latest SONET/SDH technology such as Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), virtual concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) the MSF2500 brings efficient data transport to SONET/SDH networks enabling the carrier transition to IP/MPLS based service delivery. It's unique combination of DS1/E1, DS3/E3, and Ethernet/packet mapping and cross-connect functions with complete termination of all SONET/SDH line, section, and paths make it a true MSPP on a chip.

Applications

The MSF2500 enables next-generation SONET/SDH networking products in applications involving transport of TDM circuits (eg. DS1/E1 or DS3/E3) and Ethernet frames across a metro access network to deliver TDM private line, Ethernet Private line, Ethernet Private LAN, and Ethernet Virtual Private LAN services along with transport of SAN protocols, ATM, and Frame Relay. Multi-service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) are the service provider's solution of choice for these applications due to their low cost, field-proven technology, and flexibility. The MSF2500 is purpose built to be the foundation of MSPPs.

Build it today, build on it tomorrow

Rapid and efficient development of a diverse product portfolio requires a solid and proven architecture which accommodates incremental development to meet requirements of multiple products. Products based on MSF2500 have the advantage of focusing effort on today's products while preserving the capability to leverage that effort to meet future market needs.

Integration of essential functions such as PDH and Ethernet mapping with full SONET/SDH termination in MSF2500 increases system reliability while reducing system cost and complexity. This is key to simplifying and accelerating product development. Flexibility and the capability to expand are then critical to ensuring the product isn't short lived.

The SPI-3 packet interface brings incredible flexibility and expansion capability to the MSF2500. Typical uses are to add L2/L3 packet processing functions, expand the number of Ethernet ports or add GFP-T mapping of SAN protocols. The inherent channelization of this interface eliminates the need to modify or process packet headers to achieve separation of traffic being mapped to different SONET/SDH paths or virtual concatenation groups (VCGs). This interface provides protocol independent access to the Generic Framing Procedure block allowing customers to take advantage of the "Generic" nature of GFP and add new or custom GFP mappings as required. Simultaneous operation of the SPI-3 interface and the embedded Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet MACs enables a flexible mixture of services or expansion for high density Ethernet mapping applications.

The MSF2500 telecom bus allows direct connection of additional mappers and framers. This can be used to increase the amount of termination (e.g. PDH framers or VCAT channels), add an optical tributary, or to accommodate existing (e.g. ML-PPP, ATM or Frame Relay) or custom SONET/SDH data mappings. Adding new functionality for specific product variations or for future requirements is truly incremental.

Software

Software is a critical element to development of products containing complex System on a Chip solutions. Galazar provides comprehensive software with well defined and documented APIs which are well structured and OS portable. This software goes well beyond rudimentary register address abstraction and includes inherent capability for warm starts, interrupt management, LCAS control and more. This advanced software enables a smooth, rapid integration of the MSF2500 into any systems portfolio.

Complementary Products

Galazar's product portfolio contains additional products such as our Ethernet Port Expansion (MDX250™) and GFP-T processor for SAN protocols (MDX251™) to complement the MSF2500 in order to address additional market spaces and applications.
