Description

The MDX251 performs Transparent GFP superblock generation/termination for 4 channels of 8B/10B-encoded data. When coupled with a SONET/SDH framer which supports Frame-Mapped GFP this provides a complete solution for transport of SAN protocols using GFP-T. Supported client protocols are Fibre Channel, FICON, ESCON, and Gigabit Ethernet. Client ports can be individually clocked at rates from 20 MHz to 125 MHz. A four-channel Multi-PHY SPI-3 Master (Link Layer) interface is provided to seamlessly interface to SONET/SDH data mappers such as the Galazar VersaNode, MSF2500, MSF250, DSF2500, or DSF250.

The MDX251 maps packet data from each of 4 TBI interfaces into individual SPI-3 channels. The 8B/10B encoding of client frames is terminated and client data/control is re-encoded using 64B/65B encoding and formatted into GFP-T superblocks according to ITU-T G.7041. The superblocks are then transmitted over the SPI-3 interface in round robin fashion. The client protocol and number of superblocks per GFP frame is provisionable on a per channel basis. In the receive direction, superblocks received over the SPI-3 interface are terminated and client data is re-encoded using 8B/10B encoding and transmitted over the TBI interfaces. Rate adaptation due to differences in remote and local client clocks is done by removal/insertion of IDLE codes between client frames.

In subrate assist mode, receive and transmit FIFO status is also provided to allow for management of flow control in applications where the provisioned network bandwidth is less than the full rate of the client port.

The SPI-3 Master interface operates in 8-bit or 32-bit mode at up to 104MHz for transfer rates up to 3.2Gbps. This interface supports direct, selected and polled packet availability flow control signals from the corresponding SPI-3 Slave. In the transmit direction, the SPI-3 always transfers packets across the SPI-3 bus in blocks of 68 bytes (corresponding to a GFP-T superblock). In the receive direction the SPI-3 can receive transfers of any block size.
