Description
The MDX250 is a highly integrated device capable of mapping Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet signals into SPI-3 (POS-PHY Level 3) channels. On the client side, 16 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet or 4 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces are available. On the network side, a 16-channel Multi-PHY SPI-3 Master (Link Layer) interface is provided to seamlessly interface to highly channelized SONET/SDH data mappers such as the Galazar VersaNode, MSF2500, MSF250, DSF2500 or DSF250.
The MDX250 maps packet data from each of 16 E/FE interfaces or 4 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces into individual SPI-3 channels. Backpressure on the Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports is implemented with IEEE 802.3x flow control with programmable trigger thresholds in the packet FIFOs. A mix of Gigabit Ethernet and Ethernet/Fast Ethernet channels is supported. Each Gigabit Ethernet port shares resources with 4 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet ports.
The SPI-3 Master interface operates in 8-bit or 32-bit mode at up to 104 MHz for transfer rates up to 3.2 Gbps. This interface supports direct, selected and polled packet availability flow control signals from the corresponding SPI-3 Slave. In the transmit direction, the SPI-3 always transfers packets across the SPI-3 bus in blocks which are 64 bytes in length. Transfers for packets less than 64 bytes or remainders of packets less than 64 bytes are interrupted to preserve interface throughput. In the receive direction, the SPI-3 can either receive packets in blocks (of any size) or as complete packets..
On-chip memory is used for packet buffers in both the receive and transmit directions. In the receive direction (SPI-3 to Ethernet), the device contains 36 slices of buffer memory assignable across all channels in 1 kbyte granularity. In the transmit direction, the device contains 96 slices of buffer memory assignable amongst all channels in 1 kbyte granularity. When coupled with the MSF250 or DSF250 framer, this is sufficient to support 15 km of lossless flow control on all 16 E/FE ports and 10 km of lossless flow control on all 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
The Ethernet interfaces provide all necessary counters to support SNMP and RMON/MIB-II implementations. Diagnostic circuitry is provided to enable loopback of data received on any Ethernet interface or on any SPI-3 channel. Software initiated IEEE 802.3x flow control packet generation is also supported in the Ethernet MACs to help facilitate diagnostic testing
