DSF2500DSF2500 Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) Device
2.5 Gbps Data Service Framer

The DSF2500™ is a highly integrated Data Service Framer device capable of mapping Datacom traffic into protected SONET/SDH transport payloads. The DSF2500 is equipped with 10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and SPI-3 client interfaces, and maps packets/frames into SONET/SDH lines that range from OC-3/STM-1 to OC-48/STM-16. Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) is supported through Virtual Concatenation (VC) with Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), with simultaneous use of mixed High-Order (STS/VC paths) and Low-Order (VT/VC paths).

General Description

A member of Galazar's second generation of Ethernet over SONET (EoS) mapping devices, the DSF2500 is targeted at highly integrated Ethernet transport access applications in next-generation SONET/SDH networks. Based on the latest SONET/SDH technology such as Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), virtual concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) the DSF2500 brings efficient data transport to SONET/SDH networks enabling the carrier transition to IP/MPLS based service delivery. It's unique combination of Ethernet ports, Gigabit Ethernet ports and a Generic packet interface (SPI-3) and make it a flexible and expandable mapping chip which can accommodate a variety of system architectures and applications.

Applications

The DSF2500 enables efficient mapping and termination of Ethernet for transport across the metro SONET/SDH network. It's high density makes it ideally suited for performing Ethernet mapping functions, such as IP DSLAM backhaul, on a high density FE or GE line card in a SONET/SDH MSPP. It is equally well suited for termination of many Ethernet over SONET services in a SONET/SDH MSPP or Edge Router/Switch where traffic transported across a SONET/SDH metro network is being handed off to an MPLS/IP core network.

Build it today, build on it tomorrow

Rapid and efficient development of a diverse product portfolio requires a solid and proven architecture which accommodates incremental development to meet requirements of multiple products. Products based on DSF2500 have the advantage of focusing effort on today's products while preserving the capability to leverage that effort to meet future market needs.

In an Ethernet mapping application the SPI-3 packet interface brings incredible flexibility and expansion capability to the DSF2500. Typical uses are to add L2/L3 packet processing functions, expand the number of Ethernet ports, or add GFP-T mapping of SAN protocols. The inherent channelization of this interface eliminates the need to modify or process packet headers to achieve separation of traffic being mapped to different SONET/SDH paths or virtual concatenation groups (VCGs). This interface provides protocol independent access to the Generic Framing Procedure block allowing customers to take advantage of the "Generic" nature of GFP and add new or custom GFP mappings as required. Simultaneous operation of the SPI-3 interface and the embedded Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet MACs enables a flexible mixture of services or expansion for high density Ethernet mapping applications.

In a handoff application between a SONET/SDH access network and a MPLS/IP core network the high density of VCGs and SPI-3 interface are key features of the DSF2500. The SPI-3 interface is a generic packet bus supporting 24 logical channels of any bandwidth and protocol mix across a single physical interface enabling termination of a broad mixture of GFP mapped services of any bandwidth.

Software

Software is a critical element to development of products containing complex System on a Chip solutions. Galazar provides comprehensive software with well defined and documented APIs which are well structured and OS portable. This software goes well beyond rudimentary register address abstraction including inherent capability for warm starts, interrupt management, LCAS controller and more. This advanced software enables a smooth, rapid integration of the DSF2500 into any systems' product portfolio.

Complementary Products

Galazar's product portfolio contains additional products such as our Ethernet Port Expansion (MDX250™) and GFP-T processor for SAN protocols (MDX251™) to complement the DSF2500 in order to address additional market spaces and applications. Please visit our website for details.
